The best Zermatt hotels by outside recognition are CERVO Mountain Resort and Matterhorn FOCUS, the only two in town with Two MICHELIN Keys in the guide’s Swiss selection published September 18, 2026. Seven more hold One Key, led by Mont Cervin Palace, Grand Hotel Zermatterhof and The Omnia, which Forbes Travel Guide rates Four-Star.
Zermatt sits at 1,608 m below the Matterhorn (4,478 m) and is car-free, so the useful questions are which street you sleep on, which months the hotel is open and how good the Matterhorn view is from the room. Searches for luxury hotels in Zermatt return dozens of names, so this guide starts from the award lists.
How We Picked
Three yardsticks, all outside ours. The first is the MICHELIN Guide’s Swiss Key selection, published September 18, 2026 for the second time, with 89 Key hotels in Switzerland: 10 with Three Keys, 31 with Two and 48 with One (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). Zermatt has no Three-Key hotel, two with Two Keys and seven with One. The second is Forbes Travel Guide’s 2026 ratings, where The Omnia is the Zermatt hotel on its Alps page. The third is each hotel’s own page for room counts, pools and opening dates.
The one exception is Riffelalp Resort 2222m, included for its location on the mountain rather than an award. Room counts and descriptions come from the MICHELIN Guide listings. If you search for 5 star hotels in Zermatt, the best hotels in Zermatt by inspection are the ones on these lists. We take no paid placement.
The Best Luxury Hotels in Zermatt
CERVO Mountain Resort
Two MICHELIN Keys, labeled “An exceptional stay” (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). It has 54 rooms and suites plus seven outlying lodges at Riedweg 156. MICHELIN calls the setting “an iconic Alpine setting in the shadow of the Matterhorn” and says the Dreimeta-designed property focuses on wellness and mindfulness, with an Atman Mountain Spa that offers yoga, meditation and Japanese-style onsen baths. Restaurants include Bazaar, Madre Nostra and Ferdinand. It is the pick for a wellness-led stay in a large, design-forward property.
Matterhorn FOCUS
Two MICHELIN Keys (MICHELIN Guide, 2026), with 30 rooms at Schluhmattstrasse 131. The designer Heinz Julen’s signature glass, steel and wood define it, and MICHELIN says almost all rooms have a balcony with a view of Zermatt or the Matterhorn. It lists indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, sauna, Turkish bath, tennis court and a lift that takes guests directly to the Matterhorn Express. This is the best fit among the Key hotels for Matterhorn views with direct lift access.
Mont Cervin Palace
One MICHELIN Key with 132 rooms at Bahnhofstrasse 31 in the city center (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). MICHELIN calls it “more elegant than many a big-city five-star” and says most rooms have balconies or terraces, many with views of the Matterhorn. It lists indoor and outdoor pools, the Spa Nescens, three restaurants and two bars, and a kids’ club. MICHELIN gives its season as “end of November to end of April and mid-June to beginning of October.” It is the pick for a classic grand hotel on the main street.
Grand Hotel Zermatterhof
One MICHELIN Key, labeled “A very special stay” (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). It has 69 rooms at Bahnhofstrasse 55, and MICHELIN says it has operated since 1879 and that most rooms have balconies facing the Matterhorn. It lists an indoor pool, spa, sauna, steam rooms, a jacuzzi and dining at Lusi Brasserie. Choose it for history and a central address.
The Omnia
One MICHELIN Key (MICHELIN Guide, 2026) and Four-Star on Forbes Travel Guide (2026). It has 30 rooms on the rock at Triftweg 40 above the center of the village. MICHELIN lists an indoor and an outdoor pool, spa, sauna and library, and describes modern Alpine design in wood and stone with large windows. The hotel lists a Matterhorn Suite and says some Deluxe Double rooms have Matterhorn or village views. Its site shows a seasonal closure from October 26 to November 26, 2026. It is the pick for a contemporary lodge feel.
Backstage Hotel Vernissage
One MICHELIN Key with 20 rooms at Hofmattstrasse 4 (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). MICHELIN highlights the 3.70 m-high Cube Lofts, a private cinema and a spa themed around a creation story, and presents it as a companion to the neighboring Vernissage cultural centre. It lists a spa, restaurant, bar, tennis court and bike and ski rental. Choose it for design and a small guest count.
Boutique Hotel Matthiol
One MICHELIN Key, with 33 rooms at Moosstrasse 40 (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). MICHELIN describes a stone-and-wood exterior on a hillside below the Matterhorn, with the best rooms facing the Matterhorn and Spa rooms that include private saunas, hammams and freestanding tubs. The restaurant Filet et Fils is a modern grill that serves fondue in winter. It suits couples who want a quieter, rustic address.
22 Summits Boutique Hotel
One MICHELIN Key with 22 rooms at Zen Steckenstrasse 4 (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). MICHELIN says most rooms have balconies with views of the Matterhorn and that the town center and the Matterhorn cable car are a short walk away. It lists a spa, sauna, jacuzzi, gym and library. It is the pick for a small hotel close to the lifts.
Hotel Welschen
Hotel Welschen is the new One Key entry in the 2026 selection (MICHELIN Guide, September 18, 2026), the only Zermatt hotel the guide marks as new this year.
Riffelalp Resort 2222m
No MICHELIN Key in the 2026 list, but the only pick on the mountain. Riffelalp sits at 2,222 m and calls itself a ski-in, ski-out retreat, with a railway running 600 m down the mountain to Zermatt (riffelalp.com, Nov 2026). Its Spa 2’222m is for hotel guests only, with outdoor swimming facing the Matterhorn, and spa access comes with every stay. Restaurants are Alexandre, Al Bosco and the winter-only Walliserkeller. The resort opens for winter from December 11, 2026 to April 4, 2027. It is the pick for skiing from the door.

What a Night Costs
Zermatt’s top hotels do not publish nightly rates. They link to booking engines, and prices move with the season. Ask each hotel for the rate on your dates, along with minimum stays and what the room category includes.
Seasons: When Zermatt Hotels Open
Zermatt hotels do not all run year-round. MICHELIN gives Mont Cervin Palace’s season as end of November to end of April and mid-June to beginning of October. The Omnia’s site shows a closure from October 26 to November 26, 2026. Riffelalp Resort 2222m lists winter 2026/27 from December 11, 2026 to April 4, 2027, and summer from June 18 to September 20, 2027, per its site. The other hotels do not publish season dates, so ask when you book.

Where to Stay: Areas
Village Center and Bahnhofstrasse
Mont Cervin Palace (Bahnhofstrasse 31) and the Zermatterhof (Bahnhofstrasse 55) are both listed by MICHELIN in the city center, as is The Omnia, on the rock above the rooftops. This is the choice for restaurants and shops on foot. Zermatt Tourism says private vehicles are only allowed as far as Täsch, and MICHELIN states that Mont Cervin Palace, The Omnia, CERVO and Matterhorn FOCUS offer no parking.
Quieter Streets Off the Main Street
CERVO (Riedweg), Matterhorn FOCUS (Schluhmattstrasse), Backstage (Hofmattstrasse), Matthiol (Moosstrasse) and 22 Summits (Zen Steckenstrasse) sit away from Bahnhofstrasse. MICHELIN says 22 Summits is a short walk from the center and the Matterhorn cable car, and that a lift at Matterhorn FOCUS takes guests directly to the Matterhorn Express. Check the hotel’s shuttle and walking time to your lift before you book.
On the Mountain: Riffelalp
Riffelalp Resort 2222m is the address on the mountain: skiing from the door in winter, the railway down to the village for dinner. MySwitzerland calls it home to the highest outdoor pool and spa in Europe (2026).
Best for Matterhorn Views and Wellness
Zermatt Hotels With Matterhorn View
Among the Key hotels, the MICHELIN listings say most rooms at the Zermatterhof, Mont Cervin Palace (balconies or terraces, many with views) and 22 Summits have balconies facing the Matterhorn, and almost all rooms at Matterhorn FOCUS have a balcony with a view of Zermatt or the Matterhorn. At The Omnia the hotel itself lists the Matterhorn Suite, so ask for a named view category, not a general promise.
Pools and Spa
Mont Cervin Palace, Matterhorn FOCUS and The Omnia list both indoor and outdoor pools (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). The Zermatterhof lists an indoor pool. CERVO’s Atman Mountain Spa offers yoga, meditation and Japanese-style onsen baths, per MICHELIN. If a pool is the deciding factor, ask which one is open in your travel month.
Arriving by Car, Train and Private Jet
The Last Five Kilometres
Zermatt has no cars. Zermatt Tourism says drivers park in Täsch, about five kilometres before the village, and continue by shuttle train, taxi or limousine. The shuttle runs roughly every 20 minutes and takes about 12 minutes. Our Glacier Express guide covers the scenic rail route that ends in Zermatt.
Flying In: Geneva, Zurich and Helicopter
Forbes Travel Guide lists Zurich (ZRH), Geneva (GVA) and Basel (BSL) as nearby airports for The Omnia, without naming the closest. Sion Airport in the Valais also lists its own sustainable aviation fuel sales and noise measures on sionaeroport.ch. See our route pages for London to Geneva by private jet and London to Zurich by private jet.
For the last leg, Air Zermatt is a Swiss helicopter rescue company based in Zermatt. Its site names Heliport Zermatt and Raron and offers an inquiry form with “Transfer flights” as a subject, with no prices or schedule published. For typical rotor-wing costs, see our helicopter charter cost guide.
