Helicopter charter costs from €195 per seat on the seven-minute Nice to Monaco line, and from €1,000 to €1,550 for a whole helicopter to Cannes or Saint-Tropez, according to Monacair’s own site in November 2026. Longer hops climb fast: Monacair lists from €6,500 per helicopter to Porto-Cervo in Sardinia. Hourly rates for private helicopter charter depend on the aircraft, the market and the extras, and most providers quote the trip, not the hour.

This guide shows what a private helicopter charter costs on real routes, how by-the-seat flights work in New York, when a helicopter beats a private jet, and what the safety record says. Every price below names the company or publication behind it and the date.

Helicopter Charter Cost: What Published Prices Show

Private helicopter charter is priced one of two ways. The first is a per-trip price for the whole aircraft between two named points. The second is an hourly rate for flight time, which usually starts when the engines start and ends when they stop, and often carries extras: repositioning of the aircraft, landing and parking fees, and taxes. Per-trip pricing is easier to read, and it is the kind helicopter companies tend to publish.

Monacair, the Monaco-based helicopter company, publishes both a per-seat fare and starting prices per helicopter on its site (monacair.mc, November 2026).

Two things stand out. The whole-helicopter price is not tied to the number of passengers, so a full cabin divides it down quickly. And distance does not scale evenly: Monacair lists Méribel below Cannes, while St. Moritz costs about seven times as much as Cannes. The prices are starting points, and the page does not say whether taxes or landing fees are included, so ask.

What Changes the Price

Four things move a helicopter quote more than anything else:

  • The aircraft. A five-seat single-engine helicopter and a twin-engine executive cabin are different products with different costs to fly.
  • Where you land. Heliports, hotels and airports each charge their own fees, and the charter company passes them on.
  • Waiting time. A round trip that leaves the helicopter parked while you work is billed differently from two one-way hops.
  • Timing. Peak days, event weekends and short notice all push quotes up.

Because of this, ask for a written quote that lists flight time, landing fees, taxes and cancellation terms. If the company quotes an hourly rate, ask what it covers and when the clock starts.

By-the-Seat Helicopter Flights

By-the-seat flights are the cheapest way into a helicopter, because you share the aircraft and the fare. They only exist where there is steady demand between two fixed points: an airport and a city center, or a city and a resort.

Blade in New York

Blade is the best-known by-the-seat service in New York. When it launched its continuous JFK shuttle in March 2019, Aviation International News reported a fare of $195 per passenger between Blade’s lounge at the West 30th Street Heliport in midtown Manhattan and a helipad at JFK, on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., flown with a Bell 206L-4 operated by Zip Aviation. Passengers then reach the airline terminals by ground transportation.

Business Jet Traveler reported in April 2017 that Blade’s on-demand Bounce service started at $695 for the whole helicopter, typically an Astar, and that the scheduled per-seat fare was $195. The same report described the flight as about five minutes, with per-seat passengers limited to one small carry-on of up to 25 pounds and larger bags, including golf clubs, allowed only on whole-aircraft charters.

Blade has changed hands since. Joby Aviation completed its acquisition of Blade’s passenger business on August 29, 2025, and runs it as a wholly owned subsidiary led by founder Rob Wiesenthal, with terminals in New York and Southern Europe (Joby press release, August 2025). Fares are set in the Blade app, so take $195 as the long-standing reference fare, not today’s price. The baggage point is the one that tends to survive: per-seat helicopter travel is built for travelers with one small bag.

If you want to see Manhattan from the air rather than cross it, read our guide to the New York helicopter tour. If you are flying into the New York area on a private jet, Teterboro is the airport to know.

Nice to Monaco

On the French Riviera the by-the-seat product is Monacair’s regular line. Monacair says the trip between Nice airport and Monaco takes “just 7 minutes” and lists the fare from €195 per person, with regular departures through the day. The page promises regular departures through the day but publishes no timetable, so book a slot rather than turning up.

The alternative is the road, which is short on a map and slow in summer traffic. The seven minutes in the air is the whole point of the product: it turns an airport transfer into a short hop, and it is why many travelers heading for the Monaco Grand Prix or the Cannes festival treat the helicopter as part of the arrival. For private jet travelers on this corridor, see our route guide to London to Nice by private jet.

The routes people charter most share one trait: a short distance where the ground is the problem. Monacair’s own list shows the pattern.

  • Nice to Monaco. Seven minutes, from €195 a seat or by private flight.
  • Monaco to Cannes. From €1,000 per helicopter, per Monacair, for festival and business trips.
  • Monaco to Saint-Tropez. From €1,550 per helicopter, per Monacair, landing minutes from the private beaches and the Place des Lices, as the company describes it.
  • Monaco to the Alps. From €600 to Méribel and €1,450 to Courchevel per helicopter, per Monacair, for ski-season arrivals.
  • Monaco to Sardinia. From €6,500 per helicopter, per Monacair, for yacht and resort arrivals at Porto-Cervo.

In the United States the same logic drives Manhattan airport transfers, where Business Jet Traveler described the Blade hop to JFK as about five minutes in the air (2017).

Fleet and Speed

Monacair’s site lists the helicopters it flies, with seats and cruise speeds: the Airbus H125 (5 or 6 seats, 230 km/h), the H130 (6 seats, 230 km/h), the AS355 (5 seats, 220 km/h), the H135 (5 seats, 220 km/h), the Bell 429 (6 seats, 250 km/h), the Agusta AW109 (5 seats, 280 km/h) and the Airbus H155 (6 seats, 280 km/h). That gives a rough answer to a common question. At the listed speeds, 100 miles (about 161 km) takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes in the air, before start-up, taxi and landing time. That is our arithmetic from Monacair’s published speeds, not a quoted flight time.

Helicopter vs Private Jet

A helicopter and a private jet solve different problems. The helicopter wins on the first and last few miles. The jet wins everywhere else.

The practical rule: use the helicopter to cross a city or a bay, and a jet to cross a country or an ocean. Many trips use both. A jet lands at a business aviation airport, and a helicopter takes you the last stretch to a heliport near the hotel or the yacht. To price the jet leg, see our guide to private jet charter cost. If you are weighing a purchase instead, how much a helicopter costs covers ownership.

Helicopter Charter Safety

A helicopter ride carries more risk than a scheduled airline flight, and the data shows how much depends on the kind of flying.

A 2026 paper presented at the Vertical Flight Society’s 82nd Annual Forum, by researchers at Bowling Green State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, analyzed 55 US helicopter air tour accidents from 2014 to 2024 using NTSB data. It found Part 91 air tour operations averaged about 3.94 accidents per 100,000 flight hours, against about 1.23 for Part 135 operations. Part 91 is private operation and Part 135 is on-demand commercial flying under stricter rules.

The same paper reported that about 76% of Part 91 helicopters in the study were piston-powered, while about 81% of Part 135 helicopters were turbine-powered, and that technical or mechanical problems started nearly half of all events. These are air tour figures, so they do not describe every charter, but they point in the same direction as the sensible checklist:

  • Book a company that flies under Part 135 in the US, or the equivalent commercial certificate elsewhere.
  • Ask about the aircraft type and whether it has two engines.
  • Ask about the pilot’s experience on your route and in your weather.
  • Accept a cancellation. Weather is the main reason helicopter trips slip.

Arriving by Private Jet, Leaving by Helicopter

Many helicopter charters start at a business aviation airport. If your trip begins with a jet, you can compare jet and helicopter quotes together and have the helicopter waiting on the apron instead of arranging ground transport.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rate of a private helicopter?
There is no single rate. Monacair lists the Nice to Monaco seat from €195, and a whole helicopter to Cannes from €1,000 and to Saint-Tropez from €1,550, per its site in November 2026. Other companies quote by the hour. Ask for a written quote covering flight time, landing fees and taxes.
How much does it cost to fly a helicopter for 30 minutes?
Charter flights are billed by flight time or by the trip, so 30 minutes costs a fraction of the hourly rate plus fees. Per Monacair in November 2026, the 7-minute Nice to Monaco hop costs from €195 per seat. Ask the company what its clock includes.
How long does it take to fly 100 miles in a helicopter?
About 35 to 45 minutes in the air on the types Monacair lists, which cruise at 220 to 280 km/h (Monacair, 2026). That is our arithmetic from published speeds for 161 km, before start-up, taxi and landing. Wind and routing add to the clock.
How risky is a helicopter ride?
It depends on the type of flight. A 2026 SAE paper using NTSB data found US air tour accidents averaged about 3.94 per 100,000 flight hours under Part 91 and about 1.23 under Part 135. Choose a commercial certificate holder and ask about aircraft and pilot experience.
Is a by-the-seat helicopter flight cheaper than a private charter?
Yes, per person. Monacair lists the Nice to Monaco seat from €195 per person, while whole-helicopter prices to Cannes start at €1,000 (November 2026). The trade-off is fixed routes, fixed times and tight baggage limits, which Business Jet Traveler noted for Blade in 2017.
