How much does a helicopter cost? A new light turbine such as the Bell 505 is priced at around $1 million (Aviation International News, 2023), a mid-size single like the Airbus H125 was $3.17 million for a 2021 model year (AvBuyer citing JETNET, 2022), and the VIP twins sit above that: about $12 million for an AW139 and about $14 million for an ACH160 (The National, 2021). Below the turbines, piston Robinsons are the entry point.
Helicopter pricing is less public than jet pricing. Manufacturers rarely print a number, so each figure below carries its source and year. If you are comparing a helicopter with a fixed-wing purchase, start with how much a private jet costs.
How Much Does a Helicopter Cost: Prices by Class
Price follows engine type and size. A piston helicopter is the cheapest way in, a single-engine turbine costs more, and a twin-engine VIP aircraft costs several times more again. The table gives each reported figure with its date.
| Class | Model | Reported new price | Seats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Piston | Robinson R44 | Not published on Robinson’s model pages | Not stated | robinsonheli.com, November 2026 |
| Light turbine | Robinson R66 | $839,000 (a 2014 benchmark, not a current price) | 5 or fewer occupants | Aviation International News, 2014; Vertical, 2026 |
| Light turbine | Bell 505 Jet Ranger X | Around $1 million; $1.72 million, 2021 model year | 1 pilot + 4 | Aviation International News, 2023; AvBuyer, 2022; Bell, 2026 |
| Single turbine | Airbus H125 | $3.17 million, 2021 model year | Up to 7 occupants | AvBuyer, 2022; Airbus, 2026 |
| Medium twin | Leonardo AW139 | About $12 million | Up to 15 passengers | The National, 2021; Leonardo, 2026 |
| Medium twin | Airbus ACH160 | About $14 million | Up to 10 passengers | The National, 2021 |
| Large VIP | Bell 525 Relentless | About $15 million | Up to 16 passengers | The National, 2021 |
| Large VIP | Sikorsky S-92 VIP | At least $17.7 million | Not stated | The National, 2021 |
Two cautions on the table. The 2021 figures are a few years old, and helicopter list prices have generally risen since. And a headline price is for a basic aircraft: avionics, air conditioning, leather, floats and mission equipment move the final invoice. Leonardo and Sikorsky do not publish prices for the AW109 or the S-76, so neither is priced here.
Piston: Robinson R44 and R66
Robinson R44
The Robinson R44 is the best-known piston helicopter and the usual first purchase. Robinson publishes dated price lists for its R44 Raven and Clipper models, listed as 2026 documents on Sprinkle’s Robinson page, but the company’s own model pages show no dollar figure and send buyers to a sales contact (robinsonheli.com, November 2026). That makes the factory the place to ask, not a magazine. A dealer ad is not a price list: Sprinkle’s page showed 2026 R44 dealer listings asking $847,470, a seller’s number that includes whatever that aircraft carries.
Robinson R66
The R66 is Robinson’s turbine. It is a five-or-fewer-occupant Class II rotorcraft, and Vertical reported on November 4, 2026 that Robinson expects to complete IFR certification in 2027. Its chief executive said the IFR version adds enough weight that it performs like a four-seater with full fuel. Robinson’s R66 page lists a maximum gross weight of 2,900 lb with the external cargo hook installed and an engine overhaul interval of 2,000 hours (robinsonheli.com, 2026).
For price context, Aviation International News wrote in April 2014 that Bell designed the 505 to be price competitive with the $839,000 Robinson R66. That is a twelve-year-old figure and the current price is higher, so use it only as the starting point of the comparison.
Light and Mid-Size Single Turbine: Bell 505 and Airbus H125
Bell 505 Jet Ranger X
The Bell 505 is the light turbine most buyers compare against the R66. Aviation International News put the price at around $1 million in a November 2023 caption on Bell’s 505th delivery, and Vertical wrote in July 2019 of “just over $1 million for a basic aircraft.” AvBuyer, citing JETNET, gave $1.72 million for a 2021 model year in February 2022, which is the better guide to what a typical equipped aircraft costs. Bell’s page lists a 1+4 seat layout, a range of 306 nautical miles at maximum gross weight with no reserve, a maximum cruise of 125 knots and a useful load of 1,500 lb internal (bell.com, 2026). Bell shows no price and points to its sales team.
Airbus H125
The Airbus H125 costs more and does more. AvBuyer, citing JETNET, gave $3.17 million for a 2021 model year (February 2022). Airbus lists up to seven occupants, a range of 340 nautical miles at maximum takeoff weight with standard fuel, and a Safran Arriel 2D engine of 952 shaft horsepower (airbus.com, 2026). Airbus publishes no price.
In the same AvBuyer comparison, used asking prices ran from $1.9 million to $3.17 million for the H125 and $1.2 million to $1.9 million for the 505, across 11 listings each. Variable cost per hour was reported at $498 for the H125 and $487 for the 505. AvBuyer’s seat counts for both models were inconsistent inside the article, so rely on the manufacturer pages above for seating.
Twin-Engine VIP: AW139, ACH160, Bell 525 and S-92
Twin engines, more cabin and redundancy are what the VIP market pays for. The National listed the main contenders in February 2021, and its figures remain the clearest sourced snapshot, though they predate recent price rises: the AgustaWestland AW139 at about $12 million with up to 15 passengers, the Airbus ACH160 at about $14 million with up to 10 passengers, the Bell 525 Relentless at about $15 million with up to 16 passengers, and the Sikorsky S-92 VIP at least $17.7 million, depending on whether the interior is crystal or gold.
Leonardo AW139
Leonardo lists up to 15 passengers in the cabin, a range of 641 nautical miles at 5,000 ft with an auxiliary tank and no reserve, a cruise speed of about 165 knots and two Pratt & Whitney PT6C-67C engines (leonardo.com, 2026). It shows no price. Leonardo’s helicopter site notes this is the helicopter’s maximum range configuration, so a typical VIP layout flies shorter.
Airbus H160 and ACH160
The H160 is Airbus’s challenger. Airbus lists a range of 480 nautical miles, a top speed of 150 knots, a maximum takeoff weight of 6,050 kg and two Arrano 1A engines of 1,100 shaft horsepower each, and says EASA certified it in July 2020 (airbus.com, 2026). FlightGlobal reported on January 27, 2026 that the H160 reached order parity with the AW139 in the civil and parapublic market in 2025. The VIP version is sold as the ACH160. The practical effect for a buyer is competition between two modern airframes at the top of the medium-twin range.
Sikorsky S-76 and Leonardo AW109
The Sikorsky S-76 and the AW109 are two long-serving VIP twins. Neither manufacturer publishes a price, and most buyers meet them on the used market. If either is on your list, ask a broker for recent sold prices on your preferred year and avionics.
How Much Does It Cost to Own a Helicopter
The purchase price is the first bill, not the largest one. Fuel, maintenance reserves, insurance, hangar and pilot costs recur, and the aircraft depreciates.
The clearest dated data point: AvBuyer, citing JETNET, reported in 2022 that total variable cost per hour was $498 for an H125 and $487 for a Bell 505. Variable cost covers fuel and maintenance per flight hour. Insurance, hangar, pilot salary or training, and depreciation come on top and do not shrink when the aircraft sits still. For the fixed-wing equivalent, see the cost of owning a private jet.
Most people who want a helicopter a few times a year do better renting. The rates and per-seat services are in our helicopter charter cost guide. Owners who want something between charter and a full purchase should compare fractional and jet card programs, and those who want to travel further should look at a turboprop such as the Pilatus PC-12.
Can You Buy a Helicopter for Personal Use?
Yes. Private owners are part of the market, and the FAA’s own rules on landing areas define “private use” as use “by the owner only or by the owner and other persons authorized by the owner” (14 CFR 157.2). What changes the picture is where you can fly it from and who pays to keep it. Buyers who finance the purchase can speak to a specialist at an aviation lender or broker.

Can You Keep a Helicopter in Your Backyard?
Sometimes, and two layers decide. Federally, 14 CFR 157.3 requires notice to the FAA before anyone establishes a new airport or landing area, and 157.2 defines “airport” to include a heliport, helistop or “other aircraft landing or takeoff area,” private use included. Locally, zoning is the usual obstacle. CBS Colorado reported in November 2019 that in Jefferson County, Colorado, the zoning code did not clearly address helicopter landings on private property, and that under the county’s Zoning Resolution a use not listed as permitted in a zone district is not allowed. A homeowner there argued that “if it’s not specifically prohibited it should be allowed,” and the county did not comment because litigation was pending. Ask the planning department in writing, and check any homeowners association rules, before you buy.
Buying Used
Used helicopters are where most light and medium aircraft change hands. Jetnet counted 2,215 pre-owned piston and turbine helicopters changing owners in 2016, as Vertical reported in March 2018. In the same article, brokers described a split market: “new prices are climbing and used prices are lagging,” said Ed Eckhart of Eckhart Helicopter Sales. Jason Kmiecik of HeliValue$ said single-engine helicopters were not falling as fast as other models, and brokers reported the H125 holding its value. Aircraft with transferable power-by-the-hour maintenance programs sold faster and for more.
That is eight-year-old market commentary, not a price. For a live read, use broker listings, and treat them as asking prices: AvBuyer’s 2022 snapshot showed used H125 and 505 listings well below the new figure above. Vertical also reported broker commissions of 2% to 5% on a sliding scale, and that the United Kingdom levies 20% VAT on helicopter imports, which favors domestic resales.
Questions Buyers Ask
- How much does it cost to own a helicopter?
- Plan for the purchase price plus recurring costs. AvBuyer reported total variable cost per hour at $498 for an Airbus H125 and $487 for a Bell 505 in 2022, before hangar, insurance, pilot and depreciation. Those fixed costs arrive whether or not the helicopter flies, so the cost per hour rises sharply at low use.
- How much does a 4 seater helicopter cost?
- A four-passenger helicopter such as the Bell 505 is priced at around $1 million new according to Aviation International News (2023), with $1.72 million reported for a 2021 model year by AvBuyer (2022). Its layout is one pilot plus four passengers, per Bell.
- Can you buy a helicopter for personal use?
- Yes. Private owners buy helicopters for personal flying, and FAA rules even define a "private use" landing area as one used by the owner and people the owner authorizes (14 CFR 157.2). What limits you is where you can land it, which FAA notice rules and local zoning decide.
- Can I keep a helicopter in my backyard?
- Possibly, but two sets of rules decide. 14 CFR 157.3 requires notice to the FAA before establishing a landing area, heliports included. Local zoning comes next: CBS Colorado reported in 2019 that Jefferson County's code did not clearly allow it. Ask your planning department in writing first.
- What is the cheapest new helicopter?
- A piston Robinson is the cheapest way in, and the R66 turbine was the benchmark at $839,000 in 2014 per Aviation International News. Robinson publishes dated price lists but shows no figure on its model pages, so ask the factory or a dealer for the current number.
