Luxury hotels San Antonio visitors can check against outside judges start with Hotel Emma, the city’s only Two MICHELIN Key hotel, in the old Pearl brewhouse. Mokara Hotel & Spa is the only San Antonio hotel with a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating for 2026, and 99 rooms make it a small downtown house. Beyond those two, the picture is thinner and more honest than most lists admit.
Many travelers look for 5 star hotels San Antonio can offer, but Forbes’ San Antonio page shows no Five-Star hotel. This guide sorts the best hotels in San Antonio by what the awards bodies say and what each house publishes about itself.
How We Picked
We used three sources: the MICHELIN Guide’s Texas Keys article (November 12, 2024) and its September 18, 2026 United States selection, Forbes Travel Guide’s San Antonio destination and hotel pages (2026), and named travel press, chiefly Travel + Leisure, which Visit San Antonio reposted in December 2025. MICHELIN’s San Antonio hotel pages, which cover hotels it selects without a Key, fill in the rest.
Hotels that publish no fixed rates get no price from us. Room counts come from Forbes or the hotel’s own site, and where neither gives one we leave it out. We take no paid placement.
Keys vs Stars: What San Antonio Has Earned
MICHELIN’s Texas announcement of November 12, 2024 named 20 Key hotels in the state: three at Two Keys and 17 at One Key. The three Two Key hotels were Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, Bowie House in Fort Worth and Hotel Emma in San Antonio. Hotel Emma was the only San Antonio hotel in that article.
By the September 18, 2026 selection, MICHELIN’s Texas list had grown to 28 hotels: the same three at Two Keys and 25 at One Key. That list files Sophie’s Gasthaus under San Antonio at One Key, although the hotel’s own address is in New Braunfels, a separate city. It is covered below. Luxury hotels San Antonio can claim on that list otherwise stop at Emma.
Forbes is stricter. Its San Antonio page lists three hotels: Hotel Emma as “Recommended” for 2026, Mokara as Four-Star, and The Monarch San Antonio as “Soon to be Rated”. Use the Keys for character and the Forbes stars for service polish.
The Best Luxury Hotels in San Antonio
Hotel Emma
Two MICHELIN Keys, and Forbes “Recommended” for 2026. The hotel’s own site calls it a 146-room riverfront hotel at 136 East Grayson Street, and says it holds the 2026 MICHELIN Two Key distinction as the only one in San Antonio. It also lists AAA Five Diamond for 2025 and 2024. Forbes describes a Pearl neighborhood brewhouse that Roman and Williams of New York redesigned, with a rooftop pool and three places to eat: Supper, Sternewirth and the Larder market. The spa is Hiatus. Travel + Leisure named it one of the top U.S. city hotels in its 2025 World’s Best Awards.
Mokara Hotel & Spa
Forbes Four-Star for 2026. It has 99 rooms at 212 West Crockett Street, per Forbes, steps from the River Walk and less than half a mile from the Alamo. The building was a saddlery in the 1800s. Mokara Spa covers 17,000 square feet over two floors, Ostra serves seafood, and there is a rooftop pool. Forbes puts the airport 10 to 16 minutes away.
The Monarch San Antonio
Forbes lists it as “Soon to be Rated” in 2026, so it has no stars yet. It has 200 rooms, 28 of them suites, in a 17-story tower at 222 South Alamo Street, per Forbes. The live-fire steakhouse is Oak & Amber and the rooftop restaurant is Aleteo. A third-floor wellness level holds the spa and a rooftop pool deck with cabanas. Treat it as the new-build pick, unrated rather than unproven.
Thompson San Antonio
MICHELIN’s April 2025 San Antonio article features it as “modern luxury with sweeping views of the River Walk”, with floor-to-ceiling windows and spa-like bathrooms, and shows no Key for it. Travel + Leisure calls it a downtown Hyatt property near the Tobin Center with one of the city’s best hotel pools and a 20th-floor rooftop bar serving Mediterranean food.
Kimpton Santo San Antonio Riverwalk
Travel + Leisure lists it among its San Antonio hotels and says it opened in August 2024, with a speakeasy, a steakhouse and a rooftop bar overlooking the Tower of the Americas. It is walkable to Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair and to La Villita. MICHELIN’s San Antonio directory lists it with no Key.
Sophie’s Gasthaus (New Braunfels)
One MICHELIN Key (2026 selection). MICHELIN files it under the San Antonio area, but its hotel page places it in New Braunfels, at 487 West San Antonio Street: a restored 1906 mansion with eight suites, a pool, a hot tub and a café, near a walkable town center. MICHELIN calls it “a luxury boutique inn and events venue quite unlike anything in town.” It is the small-house pick in a separate town, not a base for downtown San Antonio.
Hotel Valencia Riverwalk
A MICHELIN Guide hotel with no Key. Its MICHELIN page lists 213 rooms at 150 East Houston Street downtown and says the hotel “towers over El Paseo del Rio,” the riverside promenade, close to El Mercado. MICHELIN describes stylish, creatively lit rooms, with Dorrego’s restaurant and the Vbar nightspot carrying the hotel’s artistic character.
InterContinental San Antonio Riverwalk
A MICHELIN Guide hotel with no Key, marked new on MICHELIN’s San Antonio list. Its page gives 319 rooms at 111 East Pecan Street, a river taxi landing at its base and the Convention Center a short walk away. MICHELIN lists the Club InterContinental, Casa Dōson wellness services, a heated rooftop pool with a tiki bar and Cavalier, an American brasserie.
MICHELIN’s San Antonio list also includes The Plaza San Antonio, Autograph Collection, with no Key.
| Hotel | Area | MICHELIN Keys | Forbes 2026 | Rooms | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Emma | Pearl | 2 | Recommended | 146 | MICHELIN; Forbes; hotel site |
| Mokara Hotel & Spa | Downtown, River Walk | None | Four-Star | 99 | Forbes |
| The Monarch San Antonio | Downtown | None | Soon to be Rated | 200 | Forbes |
| Thompson San Antonio | Downtown | None shown | Not on Forbes page | n/a | MICHELIN; Travel + Leisure |
| Kimpton Santo | Downtown, River Walk | None shown | Not on Forbes page | n/a | MICHELIN; Travel + Leisure |
| Sophie’s Gasthaus | New Braunfels | 1 | Not on Forbes page | 8 suites | MICHELIN |
| Hotel Valencia Riverwalk | Downtown, River Walk | None | Not on Forbes page | 213 | MICHELIN |
| InterContinental San Antonio Riverwalk | Downtown, River Walk | None | Not on Forbes page | 319 | MICHELIN |
Verdict: for the strongest case on the lists, choose Hotel Emma. For a Forbes-rated downtown base, Mokara is the pick, and for a new tower with a wellness floor, The Monarch.

What a Night Costs
Hotel Emma’s site shows no “from” rate, and the Forbes pages for Mokara and The Monarch carry no nightly amounts either, so there is no honest entry-level figure for the top houses. Rates move with the calendar, and holiday and event weeks move them most, so check each hotel’s own booking page for your dates.

Where to Stay: Areas
Pearl
Hotel Emma occupies the former Pearl Brewery, which MICHELIN’s San Antonio article places in the Pearl district. It is the base for guests who want restaurants and a design hotel over a tower lobby. Travel + Leisure notes that ride-share works out cheaper for guests staying near Pearl or the River Walk than renting a car.
River Walk and Downtown
Mokara, Thompson, Kimpton Santo, Hotel Valencia and the InterContinental are all in or beside the River Walk corridor, per Forbes, MICHELIN and Travel + Leisure. The Monarch stands at 222 South Alamo Street, per Forbes. Mokara is less than half a mile from the Alamo, per Forbes. For a first visit, this is where most of the best hotels in San Antonio cluster.
Best for a Resort Stay: The Hill Country
Searches for luxury resorts San Antonio point toward the Hill Country resorts that Travel + Leisure recommends as alternatives to a downtown address.
La Cantera Resort & Spa
Travel + Leisure presents La Cantera Resort & Spa as a modern retreat with a spa, championship golf and views that feel far from the city. It is the golf and spa choice rather than the sightseeing base.
JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa
Travel + Leisure presents it as the family alternative to downtown, with a nine-acre water park, a spa and a golf course, and says it received a reader approval stamp in the 2025 World’s Best Awards.
What the Awards Say
Neither resort appears in MICHELIN’s September 2026 Texas Key list, and neither is on Forbes’ San Antonio page. The case for them rests on facilities, not trophies. For families, see our luxury family vacations guide.
Best for Design and History
Hotel Emma is the design pick. Forbes describes a brewhouse redesigned by Roman and Williams, and MICHELIN says it “marries 19th-century architecture with luxe, eclectic interiors that nod to its boozy past.” Mokara’s saddlery building, dating from the 1800s per Forbes, adds an older note downtown. For a modern counterpart, The Monarch is a 17-story tower, and Kimpton Santo opened only in August 2024, per Travel + Leisure.
Best for Wellness and Dining
Mokara Spa is the one with the numbers: Forbes lists it at 17,000 square feet over two floors, and the spa has its own Four-Star listing on the Forbes site. The Monarch puts its spa and a cabana-lined rooftop pool deck together on the third floor. Hotel Emma’s spa is Hiatus, which its site describes as a luxury day spa and med spa.
On the table side, Forbes names Ned Elliott as the chef at Hotel Emma’s Supper, a bistro-style restaurant, and lists the Sternewirth clubroom and bar and the Larder gourmet market beside it. The Monarch has Oak & Amber, a live-fire steakhouse, and Aleteo on the roof. Mokara’s Ostra serves seafood. At Thompson, Travel + Leisure points to the 20th-floor rooftop bar and its Mediterranean menu, and at Kimpton Santo to the steakhouse and the speakeasy.
Arriving by Private Jet: Where the Airports Are
San Antonio International (SAT) is 7 miles north of the city, per FAA data via AirNav. It has three runways, the longest 8,505 feet by 150 feet, and a control tower. AirNav lists three FBOs: Velocity FBO, Million Air San Antonio and Signature Aviation. SAT is a customs landing rights airport, and international general aviation arrivals clear U.S. Customs at the North FBO ramp on the east side. Forbes puts both Hotel Emma and Mokara 10 to 16 minutes from SAT.
Stinson Municipal (KSSF) is 6 miles south of the city, per AirNav, with a 5,000 foot main runway, a control tower and GateOne as its only listed FBO. Boerne Stage Airfield (5C1) is about 20 miles northwest, with a 5,006 foot runway and one FBO, which puts it closer to the Hill Country resorts than to downtown.
