The best luxury hotels in Kyoto by outside recognition are Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, the city’s only Three MICHELIN Key hotel, and Aman Kyoto, Capella Kyoto, Kanamean Nishitomiya and The Shinmonzen, which hold Two Keys each (MICHELIN Guide, 2026). The Mitsui is also one of three Kyoto hotels with a 2026 Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating, with The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto and Roku Kyoto.
Kyoto hotels range from a castle-side courtyard house to a mountain estate with 26 rooms, so the useful question is where you want to wake up. This guide ranks the picks by their award records and then sorts them by area.
How We Picked
This guide uses three outside yardsticks. The first is the MICHELIN Guide’s 2026 Japan Key selection, which lists 23 Kyoto hotels: one with Three Keys, four with Two and 18 with One. The second is Forbes Travel Guide’s Kyoto page and the individual hotel pages, which show 2026 ratings. The third is The World’s 50 Best Hotels list on the50.com, where Park Hyatt Kyoto sits at No. 37.
Searches for 5 star hotels in Kyoto return long lists, but a star count alone does not separate the hotels that inspectors rate highly. We started from the award pages and kept hotels with a Key or a Forbes rating. Room counts come from Forbes or the hotel, and we take no paid placement.
The Best Luxury Hotels in Kyoto
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto
Three MICHELIN Keys, the only hotel in Kyoto at that level, and Forbes Five-Star (2026). Where to Stay in Kyoto
Kyoto hotels cluster in a few districts, and the best area to stay in Kyoto depends on whether you want temples on foot or a quiet base in the hills. MICHELIN groups its Kyoto picks by character: city center, Higashiyama, Arashiyama, riverside and further afield.
Higashiyama and Gion
Park Hyatt, Four Seasons, Capella, The Shinmonzen and the Seiryu all sit in or beside the temple district around Kiyomizu-dera and Gion. This is the area for walking to shrines and teahouses in the evening.
Arashiyama
Hoshinoya and Suiran are in Arashiyama, on the western edge of the city by the river gorge. It suits a slower trip, with the central temples a car or train ride away.
Kamogawa Riverside and Nijo
The Ritz-Carlton faces the Kamogawa River, and The Mitsui is across from Nijo Castle. Both put you in the middle of the city rather than in the hills.
Northern Hills: Takagamine
Aman Kyoto and Roku Kyoto are in the Takagamine foothills. Aman is about 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Station, per aman.com. Plan a car for every dinner out.
Hotel or Ryokan?
A ryokan trades a standard room for a futon, a set dinner and bath times. If that appeals more than a hotel, read our best ryokan in Kyoto guide before you choose.
Arriving by Private Jet
Kyoto has no airport, so a private flight lands at Kansai International (KIX) or Osaka Itami (ITM) and continues by road or rail.
At Kansai, Kansai Airports opened a dedicated business jet facility, Premium Gate Tamayura, in Terminal 2 Domestic on June 15, 2018. It has its own security checkpoint, customs, immigration and quarantine area, a lounge and a meeting room, and is open 24 hours. Use costs a one-time ¥200,000 plus tax, with applications due by noon the day before (Kansai Airports, ACI Asia-Pacific). Your charter provider files the application.
From Kansai, Kyoto City Tourism gives the Haruka limited express to Kyoto Station at about 80 minutes and airport limousine buses at about 100 minutes. From Itami, limousine buses take about 50 to 55 minutes. Aman puts Osaka International Airport at a one-hour drive and Kansai at two hours by car. See our private jet charter guide for how bookings work.
