The best luxury hotels in Charleston by outside recognition are The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the only Five-Star on Forbes Travel Guide’s Charleston destination page for 2026, and The Loutrel, the only hotel in South Carolina with Two MICHELIN Keys. Seven more Charleston hotels hold One Key, per the MICHELIN Guide’s US list of September 18, 2026.

Those are the luxury hotels Charleston visitors shortlist first. The city’s grand names are small by resort standards: several top picks have fewer than 50 rooms, and the hotels rarely publish nightly rates, so the cost section below sticks to what is actually on record.

How We Picked

We combined three things: the MICHELIN Guide’s 2026 US Key list (an article dated September 18, 2026) and the individual MICHELIN hotel pages, the Forbes Travel Guide Charleston destination page and hotel pages with their 2026 ratings, and a spread across the neighborhoods where visitors stay. Room counts come from those pages, and where a page does not give a count we leave it out. We take no paid placement.

Charleston is thin at the very top of the Forbes scale: the destination page lists five Charleston hotels, of which one is Five-Star, two are Four-Star, one is Recommended and one is not yet rated. So MICHELIN’s Keys do most of the sorting here. One further One-Key hotel on MICHELIN’s 2026 Charleston list, The Nickel Hotel, is named in the table of Keys below but not profiled.

Keys vs Stars: Two Different Judges

MICHELIN’s Keys reward the whole stay: design, service and personality. Forbes Travel Guide inspects anonymously and its ratings emphasize service over facilities. The two lists barely overlap in Charleston. Hotel Bennett is the one hotel on both: One Key and Forbes Four-Star. The Sanctuary has the only Five-Star but does not appear among MICHELIN’s South Carolina Key hotels. Use the Keys for character and the Stars for service polish.

The Best Luxury Hotels in Charleston

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Forbes Five-Star for 2026. It sits at 1 Sanctuary Beach Drive on Kiawah Island, a 10,000-acre barrier island inside a gated community, per Forbes Travel Guide. Most rooms have ocean views and a balcony or terrace, and the property has five golf courses, including The Ocean Course, a Pete Dye design that hosted the 2021 PGA Championship. The Ocean Room, its steak and seafood restaurant, is rated Five-Star by Forbes. Forbes puts Charleston International about 50 minutes away.

The Loutrel

Two Keys, the highest MICHELIN rating of any Charleston hotel in 2026. It has 50 rooms at 61 State Street in the Historic District, in a new building designed to sit with the older architecture around it, per the MICHELIN Guide. Rooms pair antique-inspired decor with modern comforts, and The Veranda Lounge serves small plates and botanical cocktails.

Hotel Bennett

One Key and Forbes Four-Star for 2026. It has 179 rooms at 404 King Street above Marion Square and opened in January 2019, per Forbes Travel Guide. Gabrielle is its steak and seafood restaurant, Fiat Lux is a ninth-floor rooftop with harbor views, and Camellias is a Champagne parlor. Its own site cites Condé Nast Traveler naming it the no. 1 hotel in Charleston.

The Charleston Place

Forbes Four-Star for 2026, and not among MICHELIN’s Charleston Key hotels. Forbes calls it the city’s grande dame: 433 rooms including 40 suites at 205 Meeting Street, with a heated rooftop saltwater pool and a second pool under a retractable roof. Louis Vuitton and Gucci have shops inside. A Forbes editor’s note says the spa is closed for renovations, so check with the hotel if treatments matter to your stay.

The Dewberry

One Key. It has 153 rooms at 334 Meeting Street, in the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building, per the MICHELIN Guide. Many rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with harbor views, and the hotel has a walled garden, a spa and the Citrus Club rooftop bar.

The Spectator Hotel

One Key. It has 41 rooms at 67 State Street in the Historic District, with Art Deco touches, per the MICHELIN Guide. Each room comes with a personalized butler, and the bar is styled after the Jazz Age.

86 Cannon Charleston

Post House

One Key. It has seven rooms in a restored 19th-century house at 101 Pitt Street, listed by MICHELIN under Mount Pleasant. The Guide describes it as more a restaurant with a few rooms than a traditional inn. Reservations are confirmed through MICHELIN’s customer service team, per its page.

Zero George

In the MICHELIN Guide selection, with no Key on the 2026 US list. It stands at 0 George Street in Ansonborough and combines three restored 1804 residences and two carriage houses around a palmetto-shaded courtyard, per MICHELIN. Continental breakfast and a nightly wine and cheese reception are included. The Restaurant at Zero George is run by chef Vinson Petrillo.

The Dunlin, Auberge Collection

One Key. It has 72 rooms and suites plus 19 villas at 6000 Kiawah River Drive on Johns Island, on the Kiawah River, per the MICHELIN Guide, which puts Charleston about a 40-minute drive away.

The Cooper

Not yet rated. Forbes Travel Guide lists The Cooper as Soon to Be Rated. It debuted in 2026 as the first hotel on Charleston’s harborfront, with 191 accommodations at 176 Concord Street. It has a private marina (including a 43-foot Hinckley yacht available to charter), a rooftop infinity pool, a 7,000 square foot spa and four dining venues, per Forbes.

Market Pavilion Hotel

Forbes Recommended for 2026. It has 70 rooms at 225 East Bay Street beside City Market and opened in 2002 with a colonial look, per Forbes. The fifth-floor Pavilion Bar has a rooftop pool, per Forbes.

Verdict: for the best case across both lists, choose Hotel Bennett. For the strongest MICHELIN rating, The Loutrel. For a resort rather than a city hotel, The Sanctuary. For the smallest stays, 86 Cannon and Post House.

What a Night Costs

Charleston’s top hotels do not publish nightly rates without dates, and neither Forbes nor MICHELIN prints one for them. There is one dated figure: Post House lists rooms from $250 a night on its MICHELIN Guide page in November 2026.

That is the floor of a seven-room inn, not a guide to the grand hotels. For those, price your own dates, and for the extreme end of the market see our guide to the most expensive hotels in the world.

Where to Stay: Neighborhoods

Upper King and Marion Square

Ansonborough and Cannonborough-Elliotborough

Best for Small and Quiet Stays

86 Cannon (10 rooms), Post House (seven rooms) and The Pinch (25 rooms) are the three smallest Key hotels. All three are in houses rather than purpose-built hotels, per MICHELIN. For a bit more service at a similar scale, The Spectator has 41 rooms with a butler for each.

Best for Beach and Golf

The Sanctuary is the one beach resort on Forbes’ Charleston page. It has an ocean-side adults-only pool, a family pool and an indoor pool, per Forbes, and The Ocean Course held the 2021 PGA Championship. The Dunlin offers a quieter river setting. Arriving by Private Jet: Charleston International and Charleston Executive

Charleston International (CHS) lists Atlantic Aviation and Signature Flight Support as its FBOs on iflychs.com in November 2026. Signature’s page gives its address as 5875 South Aviation Avenue in North Charleston, says it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and lists on-site customs and immigration, per signatureaviation.com.
