Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in the San Fernando Valley is the main private jet airport for Los Angeles. Los Angeles World Airports, which also runs LAX, owns it and describes it as one of the world’s busiest general aviation airports. The longest runway is 8,001 feet, and the private terminals are run by Clay Lacy Aviation, Jet Aviation and Signature Aviation, which has three. This guide covers each FBO, the night noise rules that affect late departures, and what flights from VNY cost on the routes people search for.
Where Van Nuys Is
The FAA airport record places the field 3 miles northwest of Van Nuys, and lists it as attended continuously. The airport’s own site says it covers 730 acres today, opened in 1928 on 80 acres as the privately owned Metropolitan Airport, and was bought by the city in 1949 for $1. It cites an economic study putting its contribution to Southern California at about $1.3 billion a year and more than 12,300 jobs.
Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), a few miles east, is the usual alternative when an operator prefers it or the timing suits.
Runways
| Runway | Length | Width | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16R/34L | 8,001 ft | 150 ft | FAA airport record |
| 16L/34R | 4,013 ft | 75 ft | FAA airport record |
Jets use the long runway. The short one serves light aircraft.
Night Noise Rules
Van Nuys has a mandatory nighttime noise curfew, set by city ordinance, and Los Angeles World Airports runs a separate voluntary Quieter Nights Program that asks jet operators to avoid flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. where they can. The curfew text has been amended over the years and the exact limits depend on the aircraft’s noise rating, so a late departure should be confirmed with the operator against the current VNY Rules and Regulations.
For a passenger, the practical point is simple: if you want to leave Los Angeles very late or arrive before dawn, tell the broker when you ask for a quote.
Van Nuys FBOs
These are the FBOs that list a Van Nuys location on their own websites:
- Clay Lacy Aviation, 7435 Valjean Avenue, listed as open 24 hours a day, every day, with an FAA Part 145 repair station on site.
- Jet Aviation, 16644 Roscoe Boulevard, listed as open 24 hours and able to take aircraft up to the Gulfstream G700 and Bombardier Global 7500.
- Signature Aviation, with East, North and West terminals. The East terminal is listed as open 24 hours a day, and the North terminal from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time. Aviation Week reported that the North terminal was the former Castle & Cooke Aviation FBO, which Signature bought.
FBO fees for handling, parking and overnight stays are passed through in a charter quote. Our guide to what it costs to land a private plane shows how those charges are built.
