The best place to see northern lights is a spot under the auroral oval, with dark skies and a stay that lets you watch from a warm bed. For most travelers that means Finnish or Swedish Lapland, the Tromsø area of Norway, northern Iceland, Fairbanks in Alaska or Yellowknife in Canada. NOAA says the aurora forms in an oval at roughly 60 to 75 degrees latitude, and the season runs from late August to April in the places below.
This guide covers the science in two short paragraphs, then the places, one stay each, with facts from the owners’ and tourism boards’ own pages. No site guarantees a sighting, and we do not quote odds that no one publishes.
When and Why the Northern Lights Appear
NOAA says Earth’s magnetic field shapes the aurora into two ovals centered on the magnetic poles, and that during major geomagnetic storms the ovals expand away from the poles (NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, 2026). You need two things on the night: a dark sky and a clear one. NOAA notes that in summer at auroral latitudes the midnight sun rules out viewing.
Storm strength is reported on the Kp scale, an integer from 0 to 9. NOAA’s page lists Kp 5 as a G1 geomagnetic storm (NOAA SWPC, 2026). Iceland’s Met Office uses its own 0 to 9 scale for forecast auroral activity at midnight and pairs it with a cloud cover map, with white showing clear skies (Icelandic Met Office, 2026). Cloud, not activity, is what usually ruins a night, so a forecast of both is what you want.
The Season
Visit Norway says the lights can be seen from late August until late March, with the highest activity in spring and autumn, and that peak time is often between 11 PM and 2 AM (Visit Norway, 2026). Kakslauttanen in Finnish Lapland puts its own season from about the third week of August to about the end of April (Kakslauttanen, 2026). Visit Greenland gives late August to April and advises setting an alarm for 2:30 AM or even 5 AM, since the best displays often come in the middle of the night, and avoiding full moon nights (Visit Greenland, 2026).
Canada’s Northwest Territories tourism board describes two seasons, mid August to the end of September and mid November to early April, and says the aurora appears up to 240 nights a year across the territory (Spectacular NWT, 2026). Travel Manitoba puts Churchill’s best viewing at January to March (Travel Manitoba, 2026).
Is 2026 a Good Year
NASA and NOAA announced on October 15, 2024 that the Sun had reached its solar maximum period, and NOAA’s page says the Sun is officially in solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25 (NOAA SWPC, October 16, 2024). The 2019 prediction panel expected the peak between November 2024 and March 2026, with a maximum sunspot number of 115 in July 2025 (NOAA SWPC solar cycle progression, 2026), so the winter of 2026 to 2027 falls just after that predicted window. Visit Norway says Norway is in one of the most active periods of the sun’s 11-year cycle (Visit Norway, 2026). No agency forecasts individual nights months ahead, so build a trip of at least three nights around a clear-sky margin rather than a single date.
The Best Place to See Northern Lights, Region by Region
Finnish Lapland: Kakslauttanen
Finland is the home of the glass igloo. Kakslauttanen lists five glass igloo types: a 25 m² igloo for up to 3 guests in either the East or West Village, a 38 m² large igloo for up to 5, a 90 m² Kelo-Glass Igloo for up to 6, and a 310 m² Luxury Kelo-Glass Igloo for up to 12 with three log bedrooms and three glass igloos (Kakslauttanen, 2026). The smaller igloos have a toilet, shower and private sauna. The page publishes no igloo rate, only a half-board winter offer from €501 per night, which is not specific to an igloo (Kakslauttanen, Nov 2026), so request a quote.
Visit Finland describes the aurora season as running from autumn well into spring (Visit Finland, 2026).
Swedish Lapland: Icehotel, Arctic Bath and Treehotel
Icehotel sits in Jukkasjärvi, which its site places 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, and offers an experience all year round, with an Icehotel Northern Lights Winter package listed for December 1 (Icehotel, Nov 2026). Several rooms are open year round and the Art Suite and Ice Room are listed for December to April. No prices are shown.
Arctic Bath in Harads holds One MICHELIN Key for its 12 rooms, cabins among the trees and on the ice of a frozen river around an ice-cold plunge pool (guide.michelin.com, 2026). It sells winter experiences such as a day immersed in Sámi culture at 7,815 SEK per person, offered on request from December 2026 to March 2027 (Arctic Bath, Nov 2026). Treehotel, also in Harads, lists rooms such as the Mirrorcube, UFO and Bird’s Nest (Treehotel, Nov 2026). The two sit near each other, so one trip can combine both.
Tromsø and Northern Norway
Visit Norway describes Tromsø as the main hub for northern lights trips, with direct international flights, and as located on a small island 350 km north of the Arctic Circle (Visit Norway, 2026). It is very busy in winter, so the board suggests autumn or nearby Alta, Lyngen or Senja. Lofoten, Narvik and Bodø are listed as other options, and Hurtigruten and Havila sailings between Tromsø and Kirkenes offer less light pollution.
For a private arrival, Tromsø Airport’s own page has a Private flight section with parking for GA aircraft (Avinor, 2026).
Iceland: Eleven Deplar Farm
Eleven Experience markets Deplar Farm on the Troll Peninsula with the line “No Towns. No Lights. Just Aurora,” and describes floor-to-ceiling glass, a geothermal pool with loungers, optional wake-up calls and exterior lights that can be dimmed (Eleven Experience, Nov 2026). It says the coastal location brings clearer winter nights than most of Iceland, and that spring nights in March are still dark enough, but also that sightings cannot be guaranteed. No rates appear on the page. Pair it with a heli-ski stay: see our guide to heli-skiing.
Alaska: Fairbanks and Sheldon Chalet
Explore Fairbanks sets the aurora season at August 21 to April 21 and says the aurora is visible an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough. It says visitors who stay at least three nights and are out in the late evening can raise their chances to more than 90 percent (Explore Fairbanks, 2026). That is a tourism board claim, not a forecast.
Sheldon Chalet has five bedrooms on a nunatak in Denali National Park and guests arrive by helicopter (Sheldon Chalet, Nov 2026). The page names no aurora season and lists no rates. Call for them.
Canada: Yellowknife and Churchill
Spectacular NWT says Yellowknife is known as the aurora capital of North America. Tugáh Northern Experiences lists a 30 minute dogsled ride on a frozen lake at $250 CAD plus GST for a minimum of two people, with a maximum of 20 per tour (Spectacular NWT, Nov 2026). Churchill, Manitoba, has its best season from January to March, and Travel Manitoba says the lights can appear up to 300 nights a year there (Travel Manitoba, 2026).
Greenland
Visit Greenland recommends South Greenland and Nuuk in late August to September, Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut from August to September, and East Greenland (Tasiilaq and Kulusuk) in March to April (Visit Greenland, 2026). It says the farther north you go the more likely you are to see the aurora, and gives no numerical odds. For a different cold-weather trip, see our guide to the best Antarctica cruise.
Glass Igloos and Northern Lights Hotels
A glass igloo is a heated room with a glass roof above the bed, and the classic glass igloo northern lights stay is Kakslauttanen, with five igloo types and a season that runs from the third week of August to about the end of April (Kakslauttanen, 2026). Deplar Farm offers a similar idea in a lodge, with floor-to-ceiling glass and a geothermal pool. If you prefer a tent, see our guide to luxury glamping.
Three checks before you book any northern lights hotel:
- Does the property publish a rate, or is it by quote only?
- Is it open in your month? Icehotel lists some rooms for December to April only, and Arctic Bath lists its Sámi culture day for December 2026 to March 2027.
- Does it arrange wake-up calls for the aurora? Deplar Farm lists them as optional.
Northern Lights in the USA
Alaska is the answer for the USA. Fairbanks sits under what Explore Fairbanks calls the Auroral Oval, a ring-shaped zone over the far north where aurora activity is concentrated. NOAA says that during major storms the oval expands so that aurora can be seen over most of the United States (NOAA SWPC, 2026). That is the exception, not a plan.
Norway vs Iceland vs Finland
| Country | Season stated | Stay or base | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Norway | Late August to late March | Tromsø as a hub, with Alta, Lyngen and Senja nearby | Visit Norway, 2026 |
| Iceland | Winter, March still dark | Eleven Deplar Farm, no rate shown | Eleven Experience, Nov 2026 |
| Finland | Late August to about the end of April | Kakslauttanen glass igloos, no igloo rate | Kakslauttanen, Nov 2026 |
Visit Norway stresses Tromsø’s direct international flights, Kakslauttanen publishes five glass igloo types, and Deplar Farm is the remote lodge. Which suits you depends on how long you have and how far you want to go from the airport. For wider ideas, see our guide to luxury vacation destinations.
Flying In Privately
A private jet saves the connections to Arctic airports. For what that costs, see our guide to private jet charter cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Norway or Iceland better for the northern lights?
- Neither is better on its own terms. Norway has a longer published season, late August to late March per Visit Norway, and easy access to Tromsø. In Iceland, remote lodges like Deplar Farm sell dark skies, and Eleven Experience says its coast brings clearer winter nights. Cloud cover decides more nights than country.
- Is 2026 the best year to see the northern lights?
- NOAA says the Sun is officially in solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25, announced October 2024, and the 2019 panel expected the peak window to end in March 2026. Activity is high but no one can forecast a single night.
- What are the top 5 places to see the northern lights?
- Our five picks, with sourced seasons, are Finnish Lapland, Swedish Lapland, Tromsø in Norway, Fairbanks in Alaska and Yellowknife in Canada. Each sits under or near the auroral oval that NOAA places at roughly 60 to 75 degrees latitude.
- Which state has the best view of the northern lights?
- Alaska. Fairbanks lies under the Auroral Oval, and Explore Fairbanks says the aurora shows on an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough, from August 21 to April 21.
- What time of night is best for the northern lights?
- Visit Norway says peak time is often between 11 PM and 2 AM. Visit Greenland suggests setting an alarm for 2:30 AM or even 5 AM, because the best displays often come in the middle of the night. Dark, clear skies matter more than the clock.
