Air France won World’s Best First Class at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards for its La Première cabin, the airline’s first win of the title, according to aerotelegraph.com and Migflug in September 2026. The other contenders are Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and ANA, and a ticket in any of them runs from the high four figures to well above $15,000 one way on long-haul routes.
This guide ranks the best first class airlines using that award as the anchor, describes what each one flies, shows dated fares and tells you where in the US you can actually book them. First class is shrinking, so the last sections also flag which cabins are being removed.
How We Rank
We start from the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026, a passenger survey. The positions below are as reported by Aerocorner’s 2026 ranking, which sets the Skytrax placings next to One Mile at a Time’s reviewer ranking.
Then we check what each airline actually flies, from the airline’s own newsroom or named trade press. Fares appear only with a dated source, and we say when a figure is a blog’s estimate. Fares move with season and booking date, so use ours as a guide to the order of magnitude. If you are weighing first against the cabin one step down, our guide to the best business class airlines covers that product in full.
The Best First Class Airlines
Aerocorner’s 2026 table, which combines Skytrax with One Mile at a Time, orders the top ten as Air France, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, SWISS, ANA, Etihad and Qantas. It lists Etihad as outside the Skytrax top ten and ranked fifth by One Mile at a Time, which is why the two columns disagree. The eight with the most documented product follow.
1. Air France: La Première
Air France is the Skytrax winner. aerotelegraph.com reported in September 2026 that the La Première suite, unveiled in spring 2025, is being installed gradually on Boeing 777-300ERs. Each suite has a seat and a separate chaise longue that converts into a bed about two metres long, plus five windows, and the airline spent around three years developing it. The Points Guy’s 2019 guide described the earlier version as a four-seat cabin in a 1-2-1 layout, so the new cabin is a different product from the one older reviews cover. Air France also took the Skytrax awards for best first class lounge dining and best first class comfort amenities in 2026, per Migflug.
2. Singapore Airlines: Suites
Aerocorner places the Singapore Airlines Suites on the Airbus A380 second, behind Air France, and says AirlineRatings named them the best first class for 2026. The Points Guy reported in December 2021 that Singapore Airlines had been flying an A380 with 12 of the older lower-deck suites on its New York to Frankfurt route, and noted that the fleet was being reconfigured. Check the aircraft type before you book, because the older and newer suites are not the same product.
3. Emirates: First Class Suite and the Shower
Emirates is third in Aerocorner’s table, flying a First Class Suite on the Boeing 777-300ER. The airline’s famous extra is the shower spa on the Airbus A380: Inside Flyer describes two shower spas on the upper deck reserved for first class passengers, booked with the crew, with five minutes of running water per shower, and says the feature is not available in first class on the Boeing 777. If a shower matters to you, filter for the A380 before you pay.
4. Japan Airlines: First on the A350-1000
Aerocorner ranks Japan Airlines fourth overall and seventh with Skytrax, flying its First cabin on the Airbus A350-1000. JAL assigns the A350-1000 to selected long-haul routes, so confirm the aircraft on your date before paying a first class fare.
5. Lufthansa: Allegris First
Lufthansa’s Allegris First is built around separate cabins with ceiling-high walls and a lockable door, according to the Lufthansa Group newsroom (March 2025). Its Suite Plus is a double cabin where two wide seats can be combined into a double bed, which also makes it a couple’s cabin. The airline said Allegris First was bookable from March 30, 2025 and named Munich to San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, Shanghai and Bengaluru among the launch routes. Aerocorner puts it third with Skytrax, but ninth with One Mile at a Time’s reviewers.
6. Cathay Pacific: First, For Now
Cathay Pacific is sixth in Aerocorner’s table and fifth in the Skytrax column, but the cabin is on borrowed time. One Mile at a Time reported in April 2024 that Cathay is removing first class from its Boeing 777-300ERs as it retrofits them with Aria Suites business class, a process expected to run from mid-2024 to mid-2027, leaving first class only on the 777-9s it has ordered. Book Cathay first class only after confirming the aircraft carries it.
7. ANA: The Suite
Aerocorner lists ANA’s First on the Boeing 777-300ER eighth overall and eighth with Skytrax. It is the Japanese alternative to JAL on Tokyo routes, and the same rule applies: check that your flight is a 777-300ER with First before you book.
8. Etihad: The Residence
Etihad’s First Apartment ranks fifth with One Mile at a Time but sits outside the Skytrax top ten, per Aerocorner. Above it sits The Residence, a three-room suite on the A380 with a living area, a private bathroom, a bedroom for two and a personal butler, according to Fortune in July 2015. That is the most extravagant seat in commercial aviation, and the price below shows why most people look elsewhere.
How Much Is a First Class Ticket
Cash fares for first class are quoted by only a few outlets with dates, and airlines change them daily. The dated figures on record:
| Airline | Route | Fare | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Etihad, The Residence | New York to Abu Dhabi | $32,000 | July 2015 | Fortune, 2015 |
| Air France, La Première | New York and Paris, round trip | From $7,200 (older cabin) | 2019 | The Points Guy, 2019 |
| Emirates, First Class | North America nonstop routes, one way | $8,500 to $17,000 | June 2026 | Bolt Flight, 2026 (a blog; it names no data source) |
| Emirates, First Class | Europe to Dubai | $4,500 to $9,000 | June 2026 | Bolt Flight, 2026 (same caveat) |
The pattern is that timing moves the price more than the airline does. Bolt Flight’s article quotes about $6,000 for a seat booked six months out and over $15,000 for one searched three weeks before departure. Treat that as a blog’s illustration, not an airline price. For a cheaper way to the front, see cheap business class flights.
First Class From the US
Fewer US routes carry a true first class suite than the lists suggest. Air France has flown La Première from Paris to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Washington Dulles and Miami, according to The Points Guy’s 2019 guide, which also warned that some routes were seasonal. The new cabin is arriving gradually, so confirm the aircraft on your date. Lufthansa has put Allegris First on Munich to San Francisco, Chicago and San Diego (Lufthansa Group, March 2025). Bolt Flight, in June 2026, quoted Emirates first class fares from New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and Boston, which we read as Emirates nonstop service to those cities.
No US airline appears in Aerocorner’s top ten. It notes that domestic US “first class” is the front cabin on planes without business class, not a suite, and that American Airlines is ending Flagship First on its 777-300ERs and transcontinental A321Ts. That is Aerocorner’s report, so check American’s own announcement before relying on it.
First Class or a Private Jet
A first class seat on a long-haul route can cost as much as a share of a charter flight, and the comparison changes with the size of the group. Our private jet charter cost guide shows what a whole aircraft costs, and semi-private flights cover the middle ground on popular routes. For the business versus first versus private jet comparison, the best business class airlines guide owns that section, so read it there. In short: first class wins for one or two travelers on a scheduled long-haul route, charter wins for groups and for trips where schedules matter more than the seat.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which airlines offer the best first class experiences in the world?
- Air France won World's Best First Class at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards for La Première, per aerotelegraph.com in September 2026. Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Lufthansa, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific follow in Aerocorner's 2026 ranking. The right pick depends on the route and the aircraft flown that day.
- What is poor man's first class?
- It is not an official cabin. Aerocorner notes that on US domestic flights, "first class" often just means the front cabin on aircraft without business class, not a suite. On international routes, people use the phrase for business class, which is the closest step down from true first.
- Does Emirates first class have a shower?
- Only on the Airbus A380. Inside Flyer describes two shower spas on the upper deck, reserved for first class and booked with the crew, with five minutes of running water each. The feature is not available in first class on Emirates' Boeing 777, so check the aircraft before booking.
- How much did the Etihad Residence cost?
- Fortune reported in July 2015 that the three-room Residence cost $32,000 on New York to Abu Dhabi flights. It includes a living area, a bedroom for two, a private bathroom and a personal butler. Etihad's current fares may differ, so check the airline directly.
- Is Cathay Pacific removing first class?
- Yes, from its Boeing 777-300ERs. One Mile at a Time reported in April 2024 that Cathay is retrofitting them with Aria Suites business class, a program expected to run from mid-2024 to mid-2027, with first class returning only on the 777-9.
