Westchester County Airport (HPN) sits about 3 miles northeast of White Plains and is owned by the County of Westchester. It handles airline flights as well as a large share of the private jet traffic for Westchester, Fairfield County in Connecticut and the north side of New York City. For anyone who lives north of Manhattan, it is often closer than Teterboro, and the drive avoids the Hudson crossings. This guide covers the runways, the rules that matter for jets, the FBOs and what the routes people search for cost.
Where Westchester Is and Who Uses It
The FAA data published on AirNav puts the airport about 3 miles northeast of White Plains, on the New York and Connecticut border. Teterboro (TEB), the other private jet airport for New York, is about 21 nautical miles to the southwest, by our calculation from OurAirports coordinates. Which one to use is mostly a question of where you start: Westchester for the northern suburbs and Greenwich, Teterboro for Manhattan’s west side and New Jersey.
Because HPN also has airline service, the private side runs from separate FBO terminals, so charter passengers do not go through the airline terminal. Our Teterboro Airport guide covers the alternative.
Runways and Rules
| Runway | Length | Width | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16/34 | 6,549 ft | 150 ft | Main runway for jets |
| 11/29 | 4,451 ft | 150 ft | Runway 29 closed to landings by aircraft over 12,500 lb |
The FAA data lists three points that shape private flying here. Aircraft above 120,000 pounds maximum takeoff weight need prior permission (PPR) from the airport. A noise abatement procedure is in effect. And HPN is a customs landing rights airport, so an international arrival can clear customs here with notice.
None of this limits the midsize, super midsize and large cabin jets used on the routes below. For how runway length relates to aircraft size, see how much runway a private jet needs.
Westchester FBOs
An FBO is the private terminal where you meet the aircraft. The broker or operator picks it, but you can ask for one. We list an FBO only where its own website shows a location here:
- Atlantic Aviation, HPN East, 184 Airport Road, Hangar D3. Its location page lists 24 hour service, customs cleared on the ramp and heated hangar space.
- Atlantic Aviation, HPN West, 67 Tower Road, Hangar T. Open 6:00 to 22:00 daily, with customs cleared on the ramp and heated hangar space, per its location page.
Other handlers appear in airport directories. Ask your broker which terminal your operator uses, because handling and overnight fees are set by each FBO and passed on in the quote. Our guide to what it costs to land a private plane explains those charges.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Westchester County Airport private or commercial?
- Both. HPN has airline service, and private and charter flights use separate FBO terminals on the field, so private passengers do not use the airline terminal.
- How far is Westchester Airport from White Plains?
- About 3 miles northeast of White Plains, according to the FAA data published on AirNav.
- Is Westchester or Teterboro better for a private jet?
- It depends on where you start. HPN is closer for Westchester and Greenwich, Teterboro for Manhattan and New Jersey. The two are about 21 nautical miles apart, so flight times and prices from either are close.
- Can international private flights land at Westchester?
- Yes. The FAA data lists HPN as a customs landing rights airport, which means arrivals clear customs with advance notice, and Atlantic Aviation says it clears customs on its ramp.
