The luxury hotels Chicago visitors should shortlist first are The Langham and The Peninsula, the only two Chicago hotels with Two MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 selection, both also rated Five-Star by Forbes Travel Guide for 2026. A third Five-Star, Trump International Hotel & Tower, sits on the Chicago River at 401 North Wabash Avenue.

This guide ranks eleven hotels by outside recognition, then by neighborhood, and says plainly what is and is not published about price: none of these hotels’ Forbes pages shows a nightly rate, so we give none.

How We Picked

We started from two award bodies. The first is the MICHELIN Guide’s Key list for Chicago, taken from its October 7, 2025 article and Time Out Chicago’s September 23, 2026 report on the 2026 update. The second is the Forbes Travel Guide Star Awards 2026, read from its Chicago destination page and from each hotel’s own Forbes page. Room counts, addresses and amenities come from those Forbes pages. Where a page gives no room count, we leave it out.

We also kept a spread of neighborhoods, so you can choose by where you will spend your days. We take no paid placement.

Keys vs Stars in Chicago

Chicago has no Three-Key hotel and no Forbes Five-Star beyond the three named above. MICHELIN’s Keys reward the whole stay, including design and personality. Forbes sends anonymous inspectors and weights service. They agree at the top: The Langham and The Peninsula are Two Keys and Five-Star.

They split in the middle. Trump International is Forbes Five-Star but holds no MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection reported by Time Out. Pendry Chicago carries a Key but is listed by Forbes as “Soon To Be Rated”. Use the Keys for character and the Stars for service polish.

The Best Luxury Hotels in Chicago

The best luxury hotels Chicago offers cluster within a block or two of Michigan Avenue, per MICHELIN’s October 2025 article, with the exception of the river and Loop towers.

The Langham, Chicago

Two Keys and Forbes Five-Star for 2026. It stands at 330 North Wabash Avenue, in the former IBM Plaza, the last work of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, per MICHELIN (October 2025). Forbes says the hotel opened in 2013 and occupies the first 12 floors of a 52-story building on the National Register of Historic Places. Travelle, a seasonal American restaurant designed by David Rockwell, has two wine walls of 300 bottles each. The Chuan Spa has seven treatment rooms, and the 67-foot indoor pool has a hydrotherapy hot tub. Forbes publishes no room count and no nightly rate.

The Peninsula Chicago

Two Keys and Forbes Five-Star for 2026. It is at 108 East Superior Street, and MICHELIN calls it only the third Peninsula in America, known for uniformed bellboys and staff who remember names. Forbes describes a 2,100 square foot private ice rink overlooking the Magnificent Mile, a spa on the 19th and 20th floors with a half-Olympic-length pool, and basic rooms of 531 square feet. Shanghai Terrace serves Shanghai and Cantonese dishes, and Z Bar is on the roof. The page shows no rate.

Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago

Forbes Five-Star for 2026. It occupies a 92-story glass and concrete tower on the Chicago River at 401 North Wabash Avenue, per Forbes Travel Guide. Rooms start at 525 square feet and Grand Deluxe Suites reach 3,800 square feet, with fully equipped kitchens. Terrace 16 serves modern American cooking with river and skyline views, and the spa has a 75-foot heated indoor pool and 12 treatment rooms. Forbes lists no nightly rate. The hotel holds no MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection.

Four Seasons Hotel Chicago

One Key (new for 2026) and Forbes Four-Star. MICHELIN praised its skyline views, oversized suites and waterfall-edge indoor pool, per Time Out Chicago. It has 345 guest rooms at 120 East Delaware Place in the Gold Coast, per Forbes, and sits above the 900 North Michigan shops. The 50-foot pool has Roman-style columns and a domed glass ceiling. Executive Suites of 575 square feet are on floors 32 to 45.

Park Hyatt Chicago

One Key (new for 2026) and Forbes Four-Star. Time Out reports MICHELIN gave it its first Key after a renovation, citing floor-to-ceiling windows over Lake Michigan and a wellness focus. Forbes counts 146 rooms and 36 suites at 800 North Michigan Avenue, calls it the world’s first Park Hyatt, and notes a $60 million renovation completed in 2022. Its Mindfulness and Wellbeing suites have a Bryte Balance bed.

The St. Regis Chicago

Forbes Four-Star for 2026. It is a 101-story tower at 401 East Upper Wacker Drive in Lakeshore East, designed by Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, per Forbes, and the first St. Regis in the Midwest. Every guest gets butler service, superior rooms start at 400 square feet, and the 12,000 square foot spa has an outdoor sundeck. It holds no MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection.

Waldorf Astoria Chicago

One Key and Forbes Four-Star for 2026. It has 214 guest rooms at 11 East Walton Street in the Gold Coast, per Forbes, in an Art Deco building by Lucien Lagrange. MICHELIN notes a European-style courtyard and marble lobby, and that staff may not accept tips. The 14,000 square foot spa has a heated indoor pool, and guests can borrow a BMW 750i for drop-offs within a mile.

Pendry Chicago

One MICHELIN Key, described by the Guide as “a very special stay” (guide.michelin.com, Nov 2026), and “Soon To Be Rated” by Forbes. Pendry held Two Keys in MICHELIN’s October 2025 article, and Time Out’s report on the 2026 selection lists it under One Key. Forbes says it opened in 2021 in the 1929 Carbide & Carbon Building at 230 North Michigan Avenue, with 364 rooms, 81 of them suites. The facade is shaped like a champagne bottle, topped with 24-karat gold leaf. Château Carbide is a seasonal rooftop bar on the 24th floor.

The Gwen, a Luxury Collection Hotel

One Key, retained in 2026. MICHELIN says its facade comes from the 1929 McGraw-Hill building, and the hotel is named for sculptor Gwen Lux, whose work is still on display. It has a pan-Mediterranean restaurant, a rooftop bar with firepits and a weekend afternoon tea. Forbes Travel Guide rates it Recommended for 2026.

Chicago Athletic Association

One Key, retained in 2026. MICHELIN describes a Venetian Gothic landmark from the 1890s, once a private club, renovated by Hartshorne Plunkard with interiors by Roman and Williams. It is the closest the list gets to a boutique hotel with real history, and it does not appear on Forbes Travel Guide’s Chicago page.

Viceroy Chicago

One Key, retained in 2026, and Forbes “Recommended”. It has 180 rooms and suites at 1118 North State Street in the Gold Coast, per Forbes, with a rooftop pool and Pandan, an 18th-floor bar. MICHELIN says the lower floors rebuilt the facade of the 1920s Cedar Hotel brick by brick. There is no on-site spa, and the pet fee is $125, per Forbes.

Verdict: for the strongest case on both lists, choose The Langham or The Peninsula. For a hotel with a skyline-tower profile and the biggest suites, Trump International. For history without a chain feel, the Chicago Athletic Association.

What a Night Costs

The Forbes Travel Guide pages for every hotel above show no nightly amount, and the hotels do not publish a fixed rate either. There is no honest entry-level figure to quote, and we will not give one. Rates swing with the convention calendar, summer weekends and holidays, so check the hotel’s own booking page for your dates.

Luxury Hotels Chicago Downtown: Where to Stay

Magnificent Mile and the Gold Coast

The Peninsula and Park Hyatt are on or beside Michigan Avenue near the Water Tower, per their Forbes addresses. The Four Seasons (Delaware Place), Waldorf Astoria (Walton Street) and Viceroy (State Street) are in the Gold Coast, with Oak Street shopping a short walk from the Waldorf. This is the strongest area for a first visit and for shopping.

Along the River and Wabash Avenue

The Langham (330 North Wabash) and Trump International (401 North Wabash) face the river corridor. Both put you within walking distance of the Riverwalk and the Loop. The St. Regis is a little east, in Lakeshore East beside a nearly five-acre park.

The Loop

Pendry Chicago is the Loop’s recognized luxury address, in a landmark Art Deco building on North Michigan Avenue. It suits visitors who want theaters, architecture and Millennium Park close by.

West Loop

None of the Key or Forbes-starred hotels in this guide has a West Loop address. If you want the restaurant district, stay in the Loop and take a short ride.

Boutique Hotels in Chicago

Boutique hotels in Chicago on the MICHELIN list are the Chicago Athletic Association, The Gwen and Viceroy, each with a clear story: a Venetian Gothic club, a 1929 tower facade and a rebuilt 1920s hotel front. They have more personality than the big brands, and the Chicago Athletic Association is the one with the most history. Expect fewer spa and pool facilities than at the Five-Star hotels. Viceroy has no on-site spa, per Forbes.

Best for Views and Wellness

For skyline views, MICHELIN singles out the Four Seasons, and Park Hyatt’s windows face Lake Michigan. For wellness, The Peninsula’s spa spans two floors, the Waldorf’s covers 14,000 square feet, the St. Regis has 12,000 square feet with a sundeck, and Park Hyatt has dedicated Mindfulness and Wellbeing suites, all per Forbes.

Best for Architecture

Chicago is an architecture city, and several of these hotels are the architecture. The Langham is inside Mies van der Rohe’s last work. Pendry sits in the 1929 Carbide & Carbon Building. The Gwen keeps the 1929 McGraw-Hill facade. The St. Regis is by Jeanne Gang, and the Chicago Athletic Association is an 1890s landmark.

Arriving by Private Jet: Midway, O’Hare and Chicago Executive

Chicago Midway has two FBOs listed on the airport’s own page: Atlantic Aviation at 6150 South Laramie Avenue and Signature Flight Support at 5821 South Central Avenue (flychicago.com, as of November 2026). O’Hare lists one FBO, Signature Flight Support, at Patton Drive, Building 825 (flychicago.com, November 2026).

Drive times from Forbes hotel pages give a rough idea. Midway to The Peninsula is 18 to 28 minutes, to Pendry 18 to 30 minutes and to the Waldorf Astoria 20 to 30 minutes. O’Hare to The Langham is 20 to 28 minutes and to The Peninsula 20 to 30 minutes. Traffic changes these.

Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) in Wheeling is jointly owned by the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights, and NBAA’s airport profile (dated 2009) describes it as the business aviation facility closest to downtown.
