The best small ship cruise lines fall into three styles: yacht-style luxury (SeaDream, Four Seasons Yachts), expedition ships (Lindblad-National Geographic, Silversea, Ponant, Aqua Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions) and sailing ships (Sea Cloud, Windstar). For the smallest sailings, Lindblad’s National Geographic Delfina carries 16 guests and Aqua Expeditions’ Aqua Mare carries 16, per each line’s own site. For a yacht feel at a classic cruise rhythm, SeaDream I and II carry 112 guests with 95 crew.
Small is not a marketing word here. We draw the line at 300 guests, and treat anything under 100 as its own tier. Below we sort the lines by style and give guest and staffing numbers where the line publishes them.
What Counts as a Small Ship
Cruise lines use “small” loosely. A ship with 2,000 guests is “intimate” next to one with 6,000. We use two thresholds so the word means something you can check on the ship page.
The 300 Guest Line
Every ship we recommend here carries fewer than 300 guests, from Silversea’s expedition ships (254, 220 and 274 guests per Silversea’s ship list), Ponant’s Le Boréal (264) and Four Seasons I (222) down to the 16-guest vessels at the bottom.
Under 100 Guests
At fewer than 100 guests, a ship can often use harbors that larger ships skip, and tenders or Zodiacs move everyone ashore in one wave. Lindblad’s fleet page lists National Geographic Gemini and Islander II at 48 guests each and Sea Bird at 62. Aqua Expeditions lists vessels of 16 to 40 guests. Sea Cloud’s page lists its three ships at up to 64, 94 and 136 guests.
Why Size Matters in Port
Smaller ships mean shorter queues for tenders and landings, and fewer people at each stop. The trade-off is fewer restaurants, a smaller spa and a livelier ride in rough water. Decide which of those you value before you compare fares.
Best Small Ship Cruise Lines Compared
Guest counts below come from each line’s own pages opened in November 2026, unless the Source column says otherwise. Where a line does not publish a staffing figure, the cell says “On request”. Guests per crew is calculated by us from the two published numbers.
| Line and ship | Style | Guests | Staffing | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SeaDream I and II | Yacht-style | 112 | 95 crew, 1.2 guests per crew | SeaDream, November 2026 |
| Four Seasons I | Yacht-style | 222 (95 suites) | 1:1 guest to staff ratio | Four Seasons, 2026 |
| Aqua Expeditions (six vessels) | Expedition | 16 to 40 | 16 to 40 crew, about 1 guest per crew | Aqua Expeditions, November 2026 |
| Lindblad-National Geographic | Expedition | 16 to 148 | Islander II 1:1; others on request | Lindblad, November 2026 |
| Aurora Expeditions (three ships) | Expedition | Up to 130 on expeditions, 154 on small ship cruises | On request | Aurora Expeditions, November 2026 |
| Silversea expedition (Cloud, Wind, Endeavour) | Expedition | 254, 274, 220 | On request | Silversea ship list |
| Ponant, Le Commandant Charcot | Expedition | Up to 245 | 215 crew, about 1.1 guests per crew | Ponant, November 2026 |
| Ponant, Le Boréal | Expedition | Up to 264 | 145 crew, about 1.8 guests per crew | Ponant, November 2026 |
| Sea Cloud (three ships) | Sailing | Up to 64, 94 and 136 | On request | Sea Cloud, November 2026 |
| Windstar, Wind Star and Wind Spirit | Sailing | 148 each | On request | Windstar, November 2026 |
Verdict: SeaDream, Aqua Expeditions and Ponant publish the clearest staffing numbers; for everyone else, ask for the crew count in writing before you compare service.

Yacht-Style Luxury
SeaDream Yacht Club
SeaDream I and SeaDream II are twin yachts with 112 guests, 95 crew and 56 staterooms, all facing the sea, per SeaDream’s yacht page. SeaDream says fares are all-inclusive, covering items such as the open bar and gratuities. A third yacht, SeaDream III, is announced and gives no guest count yet. Who it suits: travelers who want a yacht with a classic cruise itinerary and an included bar.
Four Seasons Yachts
Four Seasons I is an all-suite ship with 95 suites and total occupancy of 222, per Four Seasons in 2026. The line states a 1:1 guest to staff ratio. Seven signature suites range from 277 to 927 square meters (2,981 to 9,975 square feet) of indoor and outdoor space, and the maiden voyage was March 20, 2026, with inaugural itineraries in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Bahamas. Who it suits: travelers who treat a hotel-style suite as the point of the trip.
Aqua Expeditions
Aqua Expeditions lists six vessels: Aqua Lares (30 guests, 32 crew, East Africa and the Arctic Circle), Aqua Mare (16 guests, 16 crew, Galapagos), Aqua Blu (30 guests, 30 crew, Indonesia), Aqua Mekong (40 guests, 40 crew), Aqua Nera (40 guests, 40 crew, Peru) and Aria Amazon (32 guests, 26 crew, Peru). The line points to a brochure and contact page for fares. If your target is the islands, see our Galapagos cruises guide. Who it suits: travelers who want a river or island itinerary with about one crew member per guest.
Expedition Small Ships
Lindblad-National Geographic
Lindblad’s fleet page lists ships from 16 to 148 guests: Delfina carries 16, Gemini and Islander II carry 48 each, Sea Bird 62, Endeavour II 96, Orion 102, and Explorer 148. The page says Islander II has a 1:1 guest to crew ratio, and fares are quoted on request. Who it suits: travelers who want a naturalist-led trip on a ship matched to the itinerary.
Silversea Expedition
Silversea’s ship list shows Silver Cloud at 254 guests, Silver Endeavour at 220 and Silver Wind at 274. For the polar itineraries, see our Antarctica cruise guide. Who it suits: travelers who want suites and butler service on an expedition ship.
Aurora Expeditions
Aurora Expeditions sails three ships, Greg Mortimer, Sylvia Earle and Douglas Mawson, with a fleet maximum of 130 passengers on expeditions and 154 on small ship cruises, per the line’s site in November 2026. Who it suits: travelers who want a purpose-built polar and wildlife ship at a size well under 300.
Ponant
Ponant publishes both guests and crew on its ship pages, which few lines do. Le Commandant Charcot, its icebreaker, takes up to 245 guests in 123 cabins and suites with 215 crew, about 1.1 guests per crew member by our calculation (Ponant, November 2026). Le Boréal takes up to 264 guests in 132 cabins and suites with 145 crew, about 1.8 guests per crew (Ponant, November 2026). Both sit just under our 300 line. Who it suits: travelers who want a French-run expedition ship, and on Charcot, the closest thing to one crew member per guest at this size.
Sailing Ships
Sea Cloud
Sea Cloud’s page lists Sea Cloud (up to 64 guests), Sea Cloud II (up to 94) and Sea Cloud Spirit (up to 136). It shows sample fares per person, per the line’s site in November 2026:
| Sailing | Ship | Nights | From per person | Per night (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica to Panama, March 2027 | Sea Cloud Spirit | 12 | 10,740 euros | About 895 euros |
| Tarragona to Nice, April 2027 | Sea Cloud II | 4 | 2,960 euros | 740 euros |
| Nice round trip, May 2027 | Sea Cloud Spirit | 7 | 5,790 euros | About 827 euros |
Those are sample sailings, not a fare range. Who it suits: travelers who want sails and a small guest count.
Windstar
Windstar’s fleet runs from 148 to 350 guests, per its ships page (Windstar, November 2026), so only part of it falls under our line. The two that do are the original sailing ships: Wind Star, built in 1984, and Wind Spirit, 148 guests each. Wind Surf, the five-masted flagship with seven sails, carries 346 guests, and the all-suite Star Class ships carry 224 to 312, so both sit above 300. Star Seeker, the first new build of the Star Class, has 112 suites, and Star Explorer is due to debut in December 2026 (Windstar, November 2026). Windstar does not list crew or tonnage on that page, so there is no staffing figure here. Who it suits: travelers who want real sails at a larger size than Sea Cloud’s smallest ship.
